Islander dads compete in annual Ski to Sea race

A group of Mercer Island dads competed in Bellingham’s annual Ski to Sea race over Memorial Day weekend. The event features teams of racers in a relay that begins at the Mount Baker Ski area and ends in Bellingham Bay.

A group of Mercer Island dads competed in Bellingham’s annual Ski to Sea race over Memorial Day weekend. The event features teams of racers in a relay that begins at the Mount Baker Ski area and ends in Bellingham Bay.

The Mercer Island “Don’t Panic Dads!” team included: Eric Jaecks, Marco Angel, Dave Hauge, Dean Kanenaga, Rick Bogar, Ken Duffie, Mike Gage and Ralph Jorgenson. All are Island residents except Kanenaga, who is a former resident.

Jaecks did the cross country ski race in 25 minutes and two seconds, Angel downhill skied in 35:14, Dave Hauge ran in 52:32, Kanenaga did the road bike race in 1:54:31, Duffie and Bogar completed the canoe portion in 2:29:27, Gage mountain biked in 1:37:17 and Jorgenson completed the sea kayak in 1:14:43. The team’s overall time was nine hours, eight minutes and 56 seconds. They finished 101 out of 500 teams total and 13th in their division.
