The Mercer Island girls swim team won the 3A district title on Saturday, scoring 269 points, beating next closest Bellevue by 56 points at Mary Wayte Pool.

The Islanders were led by their relay teams, which swept all three events.

Rachel Godfred, Lauren Poli, Madeleine Chandless and Mary Zajac gave the Islanders momentum by winning the first event of the meet, the 200-yard relay, with a time of 1:53.07. Godfred, Jennifer Pak and sisters Charlotte and Olivia Graham swam the 400-yard relay in a time of 3:40.94, nearly four seconds better than second-place Bellevue. The sweep was complete with Zajac, Pak, Olivia Graham and Lauren Poli’s victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team finished with a time of 1:42.53.

Godfred continued her march through the postseason via the color of gold, winning the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:08.37, more than four seconds better than her next closest challenger. Olivia Graham took third during the event (2:15.19). Godfred also finished second in the grueling 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:09.52.

Poli took second place during the 50-yard freestyle, as she sprinted to the time of 25.23. She came back later in the meet to take another second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.35. Islander Talia Homchick placed fifth during the race (1:14.34).

Pak earned third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.97) and took fourth during the 100-yard freestyle (55.03).

Chandless and Sara Markwith rounded out the Mercer Island athletes placing in the top five during the meet. Chandless placed fourth (1:02.20) in the 100-yard butterfly, with her teammate in fifth (1:02.99).

The Islanders will compete this weekend in the state meet. The preliminaries will be held on Friday starting at 5:45 p.m. and the finals on Saturday at 5:45 p.m. at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
