Michael Wales, a Mercer Island resident, was recently named to Team USA, which rowed in the 2011 FISA World Rowing U23 championships that ended on July 24 in Amsterdam.

Wales, a sophomore at Harvard University, was named to the U.S. team along with three Harvard teammates. They qualified to row with the national team after a win in the men’s lightweight quadruple sculls in the U.S. U23 world championship trials on Mercer Lake in New Jersey in June.

It is Wales’ second time being selected for the U.S. team. He was also chosen in 2009 for the junior world championship team.

Wales graduated in 2010 from Seattle Prep and sailed with Mt. Baker Rowing and Sailing Club, and with Seattle Rowing.
