Islander track and field competes at KingCo championships

Mercer Island track and field competed in the 3A KingCo championships, with events wrapping up Friday, May 16 at Redmond High School.

Mercer Island track and field competed in the 3A KingCo championships, with events wrapping up Friday, May 16 at Redmond High School. The boys placed fifth with a score of 75, while the girls finished fourth with a team score of 119.33.

In the girls competition, Mercer Island saw winners in the 400, 4×400 relay, shot put and discus events. Piper Casey won the 400 meters with a time of 58.11, while Victoria Gersch placed third and Kate Miller fifth. Sarah Bjarnason, Gersch, Miller and Piper Casey won the 4×400 relay with a time of 4:02.74, and Emily Bassett took the shot put and discus events, throwing for 35’6 and 106’3, respectively.

Bjarnason took third in the 800 meters, while CeCe Rosenman took fourth in the 3200. McKenzie Krause and Lindsay Lightfoot finished fourth and fifth in the 100 meter hurdles, and Tre Saunders placed third in the 300 meter hurdles.

The team of Saunders, Casey, Gersch and Emily Lightfoot placed fourth in the 4×200 relay. Emily Lightfoot placed second in the high jump and Tre Saunders placed third in the triple jump.

For the boys, Eric Schulz took the 800 with a time of 1:55.44, with Dylan Lesko right behind him at 1:55.88 and Nathan Gallatin rounding out the top three. The group of Schulz, Emerson Schulz, Ethan Vu and Lesko took the 4×400 relay with a time of 3:25.3.

Ethan Vu took fourth in the 200, Nathan Cummings placed third in the 1600 and Greyson Weltyk finished third in the high jump and second in the triple jump.
