Facing a four game week, thanks to rain schedules, the Mercer Island baseball team fought hard, but started with a 2-1 record before Friday’s match against Bellevue.

On Monday, April 11 the team lost 3-2 to Interlake. The Islanders lead the game 1-0 until the top of the sixth inning when the Saints picked up three runs to take the lead. Mercer Island scored against in the bottom of the sixth, but it wasn’t enough to earn a conference win.

Nick Holstead was 1-4 during the loss with an RBI, while captain Jordan Richartz was 1-4. Brian Higgins was 1-2 with a run and a double, while pitcher Max Dammeier was 2-4 with a run and Alberto Conzales was 1-1 at the plate. Cameron Ogard was 1-4 batting.

The next day the team faced Juanita, picking up a 9-6 conference win.

Runs for the Islanders were scored by Holstead, Richartz, Evan Thompson, Higgins, George Jiranek, David Oppenheim and Ogard. The team had 13 hits and three errors during the game.

Thursday the Islanders beat Liberty 15-9 in a rematch of last season’s KingCo title battle.

The Islanders had racked up all 15 runs by the four inning, while Liberty had two in the second and three in third and fourth innings.

Thompson was 3-5 during the game, with a run, while Higgins was 2-2 with three runs. Jiranek was 1-3, making his lone hit a home run, while Oppenheim had four runs during the game.

The Islanders will host Bellevue on Friday, April 15 at Island Crest Park with the first pitch at 6 p.m.
