Island’s Joel McHale to host White House Correspondents Dinner

Television star and Islander native Joel McHale has been tapped to host the White House Press Associations annual event to roast the President and Congress

According to news reports, Joel McHale has been selected to host this year’s White House Press Correspondents’ Association Dinner on May 3. McHale, who grew up on Mercer Island, stars on the NBC television show, Community.

Founded in 1914 to represent the White House press corps, the association marks its centennial this year. According to its website, “It works to maintain independent news media coverage of the president, advocating for access, handling logistics for pools of reporters who stay close to the president and those who travel with him.”

The annual dinner is traditionally attended by the President and First Lady as well as many other senior government officials and members of the press corps. Proceeds from the dinner go toward scholarships for aspiring journalists and awards recognizing excellence in the profession.
