Join the Kiwanis

The Mercer Island Kiwanis Club would like to thank and recognize David Evans for his letter in the recent past regarding the future of fireworks on Mercer Island. As a recent inductee to membership in the club, I am the second youngest member at 36 years old. David has hit the nail on the head with his insight to the aging problem our club is facing. With many members hitting the age of 80 and above, Mercer Island Kiwanis is in a difficult transition. The current roster of membership, even with assistance from other local clubs, may not be in a position to continue this fundraiser in the near future.

Unfortunately, the image most residents have is that Kiwanis is a club for older people. I disagree and am putting a call out for new members. If you are of any age and have a little bit of time to share for fellowship, social awareness and volunteerism, we would love to invite you to an upcoming meeting. We currently meet at the Island House on Tuesdays at noon for lunch. If you are interested in attending to see what Kiwanis is all about, please contact Jim Baker (jamesbaker2000@juno.com) to register as a guest.

We are actively pursuing new and exciting opportunities to continue to serve the community, with proceeds going to local charities and children’s organizations. To find out more about Kiwanis, please visit kiwanisinternational.com.
