Juneteenth Community Celebration set for June 19/ City events

The city of Mercer Island and the Mercer Island High School Black Student Union are partnering to present the Juneteenth Community Celebration from noon to 3 p.m. on June 19 at Mercerdale Park.

“All are welcome to come together in unity, reflection and joy,” reads a press release.

The celebration of freedom, culture and community will feature live music from Simon Javan Okelo’s One Vibe Band and food and activities that honor the significance of Juneteenth — a day that marks the end of slavery in the United States.

Mercer Island’s Summer Celebration will take place on July 12 with a parade, live entertainment, art and food vendors, fireworks, interactive booths, games, opportunities to meet city departments and explore equipment and more.

The event will kick off with the 10 a.m. downtown community parade and roll into a day of fun at Mercerdale Park and conclude with evening activities and a 10 p.m. fireworks show at Luther Burbank Park.

MOSTLY MUSIC IN THE PARK

Seattle Airstream Adventures will present the free and family-friendly Mostly Music in the Park from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursday evenings from July 17 through Aug. 21 at Mercerdale Park.

July 17: Paperback Writer (Beatles tribute)

July 24: MIMX (Mercer Island cover band)

July 31: Gimme Shelter (Rolling Stones tribute)

Aug. 7: Brickhouse (’70s disco and funk)

Aug. 14: Pioneer Squares (Classic rock variety)

Aug. 21: Prom Date Mixtape (’80s new wave)

PRIDE CELEBRATION

Mercer Island’s Pride in the Park community event will begin with activities at 4:30 p.m. and feature music at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 7 at Mercerdale Park.

“Come by for vendors, activities and to celebrate that being who you are is wonderful and that everyone belongs in our community,” reads a press release.

The Mostly Music in the Park event at 6:30 p.m. will feature Brickhouse offering ’70s disco and funk vibes.
