Storyteller, educator and artist Roger Fernandes of the Lower Elwha S’Klallum tribe recently visited Northwood Elementary School third-graders who gathered as a group in the school’s commons to learn how Native Americans created paint from charcoal. Students then painted a salmon they had traced earlier on a plank of wood. Fernandes is visiting third-graders in all four elementary schools this year through grants from the Mercer Island Schools Foundation. Photo courtesy of the Mercer Island School District
