Local youth rowers to compete in national competition in June

Eight Mercer Island High School rowers will travel to Oak Ridge, Tenn., to compete in the U.S. National Junior Rowing Championships, June 10-12.

Eight Mercer Island High School rowers will travel to Oak Ridge, Tenn., to compete in the U.S. National Junior Rowing Championships, June 10-12.

Seven rowers will represent the Mt. Baker Rowing Club.

Patrick Schroedl, coxswain, and Peter Lee, the varsity men’s captain, are both seniors at MIHS. Schroedl and Lee will compete in the men’s varsity 8. Both will row in college: Schroedl at the University of Washington, and Lee at Gonzaga University.

Lizzy Vincent and Claire Ihle are also seniors at MIHS. Vincent, who will row next year at Yale, will compete in the women’s varsity 4 boat, while Ihle, who will attend Whitman College, will compete in the women’s lightweight 8. Along with Lee and Schroedl, Vincent and Ihle will forego attendance at their high school graduation ceremony in order to attend the national competition.

MIHS underclassmen, Riley Macaulay and Kari Johnson, will compete in the women’s varsity 4, while Abby Elggren will row in the women’s lightweight 8. Students from five other are high schools make up the remaining 16 positions representing Mt. Baker in Tennessee.

Another MIHS student, Max Kraus, will row for Pocock Rowing Center in the men’s lightweight I competition.
