A 69-year-old Mercer Island man “belly bucked” a surveyor in his neighborhood at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20, in the 7700 block of West Mercer Way. According to the police report, the suspect was taking the victim’s surveying equipment and putting it into his personal vehicle. The victim, a Snohomish resident, confronted him and was assaulted, stumbled backward and twisted his knee. The property was later returned to the victim’s partner.

Mercer Island police responded to 1,174 total calls for service in August and made 17 arrests. There were five burglaries, 19 thefts, four cases of assault and one identity theft. Police issued 299 total citations, including 73 parking tickets. There were 10 traffic accidents, three hit-and-run accidents, three DUI arrests and one person injured.

THEFT: Two unknown women attended a real estate agent’s open house in the 8400 block of S.E. 47th Place between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. They wandered throughout the house and are suspected of stealing two prescription bottles of Oxycodone tablets. The resident discovered that the medications were missing when she returned home.

MALICIOUS MISCHIEF: The rear window was smashed out of a Toyota Camry overnight in the 8800 block of S.E. 78th Street. The total damage was $400.

BURGLARY: Heirloom silverware and jewelry were stolen out of a home in the 6800 block of 96th Avenue S.E. sometime between 9 and 11:15 a.m. The home, in a South end neighborhood east of Pioneer Park, was entered through the lower rear sliding door while the 75-year-old resident was away with her granddaughter. A large silver bracelet and silver ring with a green stone were stolen out of the bedroom closet. A carving set, serving spoons and scoops were also stolen. Several suspect fingerprints were lifted for evidence. The total value of the loss was unknown.

FENDER-BENDER: A vehicle rear-ended a SUV when it stopped at a stop sign at 4:12 p.m. in the intersection of S.E. 40th Street and 90th Avenue S.E. The 31-year-old driver was cited for following too closely and not having car insurance. Both vehicles had been progressing with traffic. No injuries were reported.
FORGERY: A former employee of a business in the 7600 block of S.E. 27th Street stole company checks and deposited money into her personal bank account after forging the owner’s signature. The woman, a Renton resident, accumulated a total of $52,000 over 16 months, from July 2011 through May 2013. Police are continuing to investigate the case.
