A 17-year-old driver used his vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz, to push a shopping cart around the QFC parking lot at 7823 S.E. 28th Street at 2:40 a.m. on Aug. 20. The cart hit another cart and pushed it into a parked car, damaging the front passenger door. Police cited the driver for reckless driving and left a note on the parked vehicle. Two witnesses were present.

Aug. 12

Stove theft: Three new stoves were stolen at 2:15 p.m. from a fenced area next to the Island Square Apartments on 78th Avenue S.E. after their delivery. Garbage collectors left a gate open and an apartment security camera recorded a video of unknown subjects loading the stoves into a red extended cab pickup truck after backing it up.

Aug. 13

Failure to yield: A vehicle struck a curb in the 4400 block of Island Crest Way at 2:10 p.m. to avoid a collision when another vehicle making a turn failed to yield the right of way.

Aug. 14

Car prowl: Someone entered an unlocked Chevrolet Suburban in the 2800 block of 67th Avenue S.E. sometime overnight and stole a checkbook, Garmin GPS, Bluetooth and $30 in coins. A man took a stolen check to a bank, but was not allowed to process it. The total loss was $265.

Aug. 16

Car prowl: Suspects broke the front passenger window of a BMW between 5:45 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. in the north lot of Luther Burbank Park at 2040 84th Avenue S.E. They stole a purse from the backseat and wallet with $200 in cash, credit and debit cards, and ID. Fingerprints were lifted from a rear door handle. One witness reported two male suspects in their early 20s, their vehicle and license plate number.

Aug. 17

iPad found: A Mercer Island woman turned an iPad over to the MIPD at 12:51 p.m. and reported that she had found it lying in the street in the 3400 block of 78th Avenue S.E.

Malicious mischief: A section of netting in a Mercer Island man’s batting cage was cut out and thrown into a neighbor’s yard waste container. The batting cage was in the front yard in the 4200 block of Mercerwood Drive. The net had been cut once before, nearly three weeks prior. An unknown suspect also threw a bucket of baseballs into the street. Neighbors were unaware of the incident.

DUI: Police arrested a 30-year-old Mercer Island man at the boat launch at 7:35 p.m. for operating a vehicle and a boat while drunk. The suspect was “physically and verbally combative,” according to the police report, and refused field sobriety tests and the BAC. His boat was impounded and he was booked into the King County Jail.

Aug. 18

Forgery: A 41-year-old caregiver, a Seattle resident, stole checks from the woman, 96, in her care and forged them. She also stole the victim’s prescription pain medications after fraudulently filling them. There is one witness in the case.

Burglary: Two male teenagers entered an attached garage in the 7600 block of 85th Place S.E. at 8:27 p.m. The 48-year-old resident interrupted them as they were trespassing, and no items were stolen. The resident immediately reported the incident.

Aug. 20

Arrest: United States Forest Service officers transferred a 23-year-old man into the custody of Mercer Island police on a warrant at 6:40 p.m. The suspect was booked into the Issaquah Jail.

Assault: Police arrested a 49-year-old Mercer Island man at 11:19 p.m. in the 3400 block of 97th Avenue S.E. for assaulting his wife with a butcher knife and making threats to kill. There are two witnesses in the case. The suspect spoke in Russian to one witness, threatening to kill all of them after his release from prison.

Aug. 21

Accident: A collision occurred in the intersection of S.E. 40th Street and Island Crest Way when a driver, 16, was blinded by the sun and tried to pull out his sun visor. He was cited for inattention after his vehicle struck an oncoming vehicle, hit a city light pole and came to a stop in adjacent bushes at 7 p.m. Aid units transported both occupants of the other vehicle to a hospital, and both vehicles were towed from the scene. The other driver, 28, who was going 30 to 35 mph through a green light, reported neck and back pain.
