Mercer Island begins season with jamboree | Prep cross country

The Mercer Island boys and girls cross country teams started off the season with a jamboree against the other KingCo 3A/2A teams last Thursday at Lake Sammamish State Park.

The Mercer Island boys and girls cross country teams started off the season with a jamboree against the other KingCo 3A/2A teams last Thursday at Lake Sammamish State Park.

Runners in the jamboree compete by grade, racing in a two-mile run. For the boys team, Tiger McBurney finished fourth, Weston Sharples finished eighth and Jacob Jenkins finished ninth for the freshman class, while Nathan Gallatin and Dylan Lesko finished fifth and sixth for the sophomores. Daniel Mayer and Nathan Cummings were second and seventh for the juniors, with senior Matt Wopitka finishing fifth overall.

On the girls side freshman Alexa Bauman and junior Alida Scalzo each finish first in their division. Freshman Ella Green was third, Madeline Zelde was fifth, Cecelia Rosenman was sixth and Natalie Weaver was seventh. Sophomore Sally Carroll took eighth place, while junior captain Sarah Bjarnason took second and senior Kaya McRuer was eighth.

The team will host Sammamish on Wednesday, Sept. 12 in a KingCo meet starting at 4 p.m. at Luther Burbank Park.
