The Mercer Island Community Fund has agreed to match $10,000 in funds to help save the fireworks show put on during Summer Celebration. The MICF will match any and all donations from the community or sponsors up to $10,000.

“We are so pleased that the Mercer Island Community Fund has stepped up with this generous challenge,” said Jim Pearman, mayor of the City of Mercer Island, in a press release. “Mercer Islander’s are so generous, I just know the community will accept the challenge, come through with donations, and keep alive this Mercer Island tradition that so many of our residents and families look forward to each year.”

The annual fireworks show, typically held on the Saturday evening of the weekend event, is done off a barge in Lake Washington. This year, the display was going to be canceled due to budget cuts unless $22,850 is raised.

“It really was tough to pull the funding for our fireworks display out of our biennial budget. It’s just such a great community event that attracts Mercer Islanders of all ages,” said Mercer Island City Manager Rich Conrad. “This matching grant puts the possibility of this fantastic event back on the table. MICF has been a great community partner for us over the years-we’re very grateful for their generosity.”

Donations can be made online at www.micommunityfund.org or by mailing a check to the City of Mercer Island at 2040 84th Ave. S.E., Mercer Island. Interested parties can also drop off donations at the Community Center at Mercer View or at City Hall.

Business sponsorships of over $1,000 can be done through Summer Celebration Director Amber Britton. She can be reached at amber.britton@mercergov.org.
