Mercer Island competes at Bellevue Invite | Prep track and field

Islanders register several top-ten finishes against 35 other teams

The members of Mercer Island’s track and field team got an early taste of postseason-level action at the Bellevue Invitational Saturday at Bellevue High School.

Competing against 35 other schools that spanned 1A through 4A classifications, the Islander girls placed ninth overall, while the Mercer Island boys finished 31st.

Kayla Lee finished in the top five of three events for the Islander girls, while Victoria Gersch placed in the top 10 in two events. Lee was second in the 800 meter run (2:16.03), fourth in the 200 meter dash (26.09) and fourth in the high jump (5 feet). Gersch placed third in the 200 meter dash (25.67) and was sixth in the 100 meter dash (12.58).

Mercer Island’s relay team of Gersch, Ella Hensey, Lee and Kendra Watson was fourth in the 4×200 relay (1:47.25). The team of Maggie Baker, Eliza Crenshaw, Ella Hensey and Mathilda Noone was fifth in the 2000 sprint medley relay (5:58.31).

Chloe Michaels was 11th (11:39.18) and Cece Rosenman was 12th (11:44.66) in the 3200.

Alexa Bauman placed 12th in the 800 (2:25.80) and Watson placed 13th in the 300 hurdles (49.68) and 22nd in the 100 hurdles (17.45). Eliza Crenshaw, Channing Martin, Katherine McCormick and Mathilda Noone were 19th in the 4×100 (54.56).

For the Mercer Island boys, Emerson Schulz placed fifth in the 400 meter dash (51.92). Jaelin Tate was seventh in the high jump (5-8) and placed 15th in the long jump (19-11).

Benjamin Wilt was 12th in the 100 meter dash (11.37) and 17th in the 200 meter dash (23.57). Nate Benson was 16th in the 3200 (9:50.28).

The group of Jeffrey Leung, Tate, Wilt and Christopher Yee were 18th in the 4×100 (45.65), while Jackson Caputo, Ricky Chess, Leung and Malachi Morgan were 21st in the 4×200 (1:45.73). Morgan placed 21st in javelin (135-10). Caputo, Chess, Jonathan Na and Sam Wilt placed 19th overall in the 2000 sprint medley relay (5:41.28).
