Daniel Knapp and his sister, Arielle Knapp, are organizing a benefit concert to help the countless children suffering from the aftermath of the seemingly never-ending devastation in northern Japan.

Both avid violinists, Daniel and Arielle, along with friends, will perform at this event, scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 17, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 8501 S.E. 40th Street in Mercer Island. All proceeds will be donated.

The two Knapp children are bilingual and bicultural, half-Japanese and half-American. According to their mother, Kiyoko Knapp, the two “set their feet” in their mother’s native Japan for the first time when a career transition took the family from Seattle to Tokyo in 2009.

The family lived in the heart of Tokyo, in the midst of skyscrapers, where both children attended a public school, befriended many, and ultimately embraced their newly found sense of self in their “other” motherland, she explained.

Thinking of how profoundly the recent disaster has affected the entire nation, “We have felt a keen sense of loss,” she said.

Daniel and Arielle are now hoping to utilize their musical skills to make a difference. It will be a group effort that other young violinists will be joining in as well. The event is called “Concert By Children, For Children.”
