Mercer Island middle schoolers hear from Holocaust survivor

Warsaw Ghetto survivor George Elbaum spoke to Islander Middle School eighth graders on Holocaust Remembrance Day, April 24.

Elbaum told his story of escaping from the ghetto with his mother and being placed with a series of Polish Catholic families who sheltered him for three years. He was reunited with his mother after the war and came to America in 1949. He went on to receive bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees from MIT and work in the aerospace industry.

His memoir, “Neither Yesterdays Nor Tomorrows: Vignettes of a Holocaust Childhood,” was published in 2010.
