Suspended license

An Island man was arrested for driving with a suspended license on March 26. According to the incident report, a Mercer Island police officer observed the suspect driving north from the 4000 block of Island Crest Way in his 1987 Ford Thunderbird. The officer verified that the suspect was driving with a suspended license and followed him onto I-90 toward Seattle. Due to traffic conditions, the officer was unable to pull the suspect over until Rainier Avenue South and South Dearborn Street in Seattle. The suspect was arrested and his vehicle was searched. The officer found items from an attempted vehicle prowl that had occurred earlier that day. The objects were collected as evidence.

Fire

Mercer Island firefighters extinguished a trash can fire at the Mercerdale Park playground at approximately 10 p.m., March 26. According to the incident report, the plastic liner of the trash can had melted. The fire department believes that the blaze was accidental, possibly caused by a cigarette butt.

Car prowl

A woman reported that she witnessed an attempted car prowl in the 8000 block of North Mercer Way on March 26. According to the report, the witness saw the suspect remove the rear-window wiper on an Island woman’s Toyota Prius. The suspect then tried to pry open the driver’s side door with the wiper blade. The suspect saw the witness and ran off. Total damages are $300.

Accidents

A T-bone accident occurred at the intersection of Island Crest Way and S.E. 47th Street on March 25. According to the report, a vehicle on S.E. 47th Street stopped at the stop sign before entering Island Crest Way and waited for traffic to pass. The driver then proceeded into Island Crest Way and, not seeing a northbound U.S. Postal Service truck, struck the vehicle’s side. No injuries were reported.

Arrests

A Seattle man with a felony warrant to his name was arrested in the 3600 block of Island Crest Way on March 25. According to the police report, an officer stopped the driver for a traffic offense. A computer check indicated that the man had a King County warrant for violation of the Uniform Controlled Substance Act in the amount of $10,000, a Seattle Police Department warrant for dangerous drugs, third-degree theft, alcohol on breath and a San Bernardino County warrant for dangerous drugs. The subject was arrested and transported to the Mercer Island Police Department.

A 55-year-old man was arrested for shoplifting at Walgreens on March 24. According to the police report, a Walgreens customer saw the man set off the security alarm while leaving the drug store. The witness followed the suspect to the Park and Ride, called 911 and approached the suspect to ask him about the incident. When questioned, the suspect initially denied being in the store, then admitted he had been at Walgreens and pulled two Gillette razors, a Conair Personal Trimmer, Wahl Classic Fader Haircutting Kit and Conair Trimmer from his pocket. He admitted to stealing the merchandise. The suspect was arrested and booked into the Issaquah Jail.

Mercer Island police arrested three Island residents for possession of stolen property, vehicle prowl and driving with a suspended license on March 23. According to the police report, an officer stopped a vehicle with the three suspects inside for a traffic infraction. The driver was arrested for driving with a suspended license, and a vehicle search turned up property stolen from local car prowls that had occurred the night before. The property included: tools, keys, a wireless keyboard, snowboard boots, a badminton racket, shoebox with flex cuffs, 12-inch knife, a bayonet, $70 in cash and a CD with photos. The two passengers were arrested for possessing stolen property. One of the passengers confirmed other agency warrants. Police contacted several owners of some of the property, and they reclaimed their goods. The subject with a warrant was turned over to the King County Sheriff’s Office. The driver and passenger were questioned and released.

Fraud

An Island man reported that several fraudulent charges were made on his Wells Fargo debit card on March 23. According to his report, the charges, which added up to approximately $1,700, were made sometime between March 12 and March 16. The transactions were made through United Airlines in Chicago. Wells Fargo refunded all the charges.

An Island woman reported that $750 had been fraudulently charged to her Capital One Visa card on March 23. According to the report, the woman was in possession of her cards and did not authorize any charges.
