Burglaries

An Island couple living in the 3800 block of 80th Avenue S.E. reported that their residence was broken into on March 9. According to the incident report, the burglars forced their way into the house through a pet door in the back of the house. The couple’s Hyundai car was also damaged. Total loss is estimated at $20,000.

A church in the 4500 block of Island Crest Way was robbed on the night of March 8. According to the incident report, the burglar entered the church, forced an office door open and stole computer equipment, miscellaneous software, five sets of keys and postage stamps. Police acquired possible latent fingerprints, which are being examined in a lab. The church pastor said that over hundreds of people have keys to the main entrance of the church door.

Arrests

A 19-year-old man was arrested for the possession of marijuana after being pulled over for a traffic violation on March 9. According to the report, police smelled a strong odor of marijuana when speaking to the driver. When asked about the marijuana, the suspect admitted that he had been smoking it. When asked if there was more in the car, the suspect confirmed this and asked the officer if he wanted any. He then displayed a small bag of marijuana from his pocket. The officer arrested the man and the marijuana was placed into evidence.

Police arrested a man for having an outstanding warrant for marijuana possession on March 9. According to the report, the man was pulled over in the 2700 block of 76th Avenue S.E. for a defective headlight. A computer check revealed the outstanding warrant. The man was arrested and booked into the King County Jail.

Island police stopped a vehicle in the 7800 block of S.E. 28th Street for expired tabs on March 6 and discovered that the driver was driving with a suspended license. According to the incident report, a police check on the vehicle showed that it had been sold on Dec. 5, 2006. The driver produced a bill of sale showing that he had purchased the 1987 Toyota, yet he was found guilty for driving with a suspended license. The man was arrested and booked into the Issaquah Jail.

Fraud

An Island man reported identity fraud on March 9, stating that he had been charged with $1,500 in services at Harborview Medical Center that he did not receive. The services were dated around Feb. 9. According to the report, the victim contacted Harborview and was informed that somebody had been arrested by police and brought to the hospital for treatment using the victim’s name. The victim believes it was his brother.

The owner of an Island restaurant reported on March 9 that an ex-employee stole and cashed some forged checks. According to the incident report, approximately $367 was illegally obtained from the Bank of America by a written forged check. A bank teller notified the business of the transaction after sensing suspicious activity. The reporting party also believes that the ex-employee is responsible for entering the restaurant in the middle of the night and stealing approximately $1,200 over the past two months.

An Island woman reported $344.11 in unauthorized withdrawals on her debit card on March 8. According to the report, the victim had never given anybody permission to use her card for purchases, nor did she lose her card. All of the purchases were done so out of state.

Car accidents

A two-car collision occurred in the intersection of S.E. 27th Street and 80th Avenue S.E. on March 7 when an 18-year-old failed to stop at the stop sign. According to the report, the woman proceeded through the intersection and struck the rear passenger side of a second vehicle, which was driving eastbound on S.E. 27th Street. The impact of the collision caused the second car to spin out at a 90-degree angle. No injuries were reported.

Man drives 110 mph to make bid on eBay

A 46-year-old Fall City man was arrested on Mercer Island for reckless driving after he was observed traveling 110 mph on the I-90 floating bridge on March 10. When stopped, he advised the state trooper that he was trying to get home to make a bid on eBay before the auction closed. The trooper observed the vehicle driving at an extremely high speed while passing other motorists in the express lanes of eastbound I-90 in the Mount Baker Tunnel. As the vehicle exited the tunnel, the trooper obtained a radar reading of 100 mph. While attempting to catch up with the vehicle, the trooper obtained a second radar reading of 110 mph as the car proceeded over the floating bridge. The trooper activated his emergency equipment to conduct a traffic stop at the east end of the bridge. The man continued at a high rate of speed through the Mercer Island Lid and exited onto Mercer Island, where he eventually stopped. After the man was taken into custody, he informed the trooper that he was late placing the bid on eBay. The man was booked into the King County Jail on reckless driving charges. He has multiple criminal convictions for driving-related offenses.
