Theft

An Island teenager reported that his backpack, which he had hidden in the bushes in a Town Center park, was stolen from its hiding place on March 17. According to the incident report, the 14-year-old hid the backpack in the bushes while he was longboarding in the area.

An Island couple reported that their estranged adult son stole a number of jewelry items and cash from them on March 22. According to the police report, the son stole his parents’ debit card, which he used to withdraw an unrecorded amount of cash. The 38-year-old also stole various jewelry, including several gold and diamond pendants, a crystal necklace and earrings, a jade ring and a diamond ring. One piece of jewelry was found to have been pawned in Seattle on March 12 by the suspect.

Accidents

A cyclist collided with a car in the intersection of North Mercer Way and 80th Avenue S.E. on March 20. According to the incident report, a driver from Renton was traveling westbound in the 8000 block of North Mercer Way, about to make a left turn onto 80th Avenue S.E. The cyclist struck the front corner of the man’s car and was knocked off his bike. He suffered minor injuries to his knee and shin, but refused treatment. The bike sustained a broken frame.

Fraud

A woman from Flagstaff, Ariz., reported that an employee of Speedy Autoglass of Mercer Island was using her Social Security number. The crime was reported on March 19.

Vandalism

A man living in the 7800 block of S.E. 72nd Street reported that his Honda Civic was vandalized on March 20. According to the police report, an unknown person smashed the front windshield and rear window. The car was also keyed on the rear passenger side. Nothing was stolen from the Honda.

Unknown suspects sprayed graffiti and damaged an antenna in the Lid Park sometime between March 19 and March 22. A motion-activated camera in the park was also destroyed.

Arrests

Police arrested an Island man for driving under the influence on March 20 after he was stopped for speeding in the 8000 block of eastbound I-90. The man was driving 69 mph in a 35 mph zone. The driver was contacted and admitted to consuming a “few pints” of beer. He agreed to a standard field sobriety test, which he failed. His breathalyzer revealed a blood point of .109. The man was arrested and transported to the Marriott Hotel in Bellevue.

An officer arrested an Island man for driving under the influence after he observed his car nose-down in a ditch in the 8500 block of East Mercer Way on March 20. According to the police report, the subject was stumbling while walking behind the vehicle on the roadway. The man was identified as the driver of the vehicle. He failed a standard field sobriety test and his breathalyzer revealed a blood point of .149. The man was arrested and transported to the Mercer Island Police Department.

Police located and arrested a subject with a $1,000 misdemeanor warrant from King County. Officers found the 25-year-old in the 9511 block of S.E. 36th Street on March 22. He was booked into the Issaquah Jail.

Burglary

An Island woman left her home in the 7200 block of S.E. 36th Street on March 18 and returned on March 20 to find that the residence had been burglarized. Various jewelry and prescription medicines were stolen from her home. The estimated loss is about $40,000.
