The following scholarship announcements have been received by the Reporter and are listed by name and recipient.
Paul V. Peterson Scholarship
James Brockmeyer
James Brockmeyer, the director of wellness at Covenant Shores on Mercer Island, was awarded the Paul V. Peterson Scholarship of $2,500. The funds will help him pay to finish his study of gerontology at the University of Washington.
The scholarship is awarded by Covenant Retirement Communities to an employee who is taking classes that support and are beneficial to their employment with the company.
There were 28 applications from across the country for the award, and Brockmeyer is one of two recipients. He has been the director of wellness since August 2005.
Robert C. Byrd Scholarship
Matthew N.R. Johnson
Matthew N.R. Johnson, MIHS Class of 2010, has been selected as one of the Washington state high school graduates to receive the Robert C. Byrd Scholarship. This longstanding four-year renewable award, named after the late U.S. senator, is the nation’s only merit-based scholarship program funded through the U.S. Department of Education. Winners are nominated by their high schools and then selected based on overall GPA, strength of their high school curriculum, standardized test scores and a brief essay on future career plans.
Johnson, along with Eliana Rudee, is also this year’s recipient of the Mercer Island Masonic Lodge Scholarship. He plans to begin studying the physical sciences and play soccer at Haverford College in Pennsylvania next month.
Lincoln Award Scholarship
Rosemary Leach
Rosemary Leach, a 2010 Mercer Island High School graduate, won a $1,000 scholarship for college in the Lincoln Award essay contest sponsored by the Mercer Island Republican Women. Leach plans to attend Cottey College in Nevada to study nursing. She also received an award for being in the top 10 percent of her class statewide. While at school on Mercer Island, she participated in marching band and tutoring programs and is a member of the Mercer Island Covenant Church.
BECU Foundation Scholarship
Eliana Rudee
Eliana Rudee, a recent graduate of Mercer Island High School, is one of 40 students to receive a $2,500 scholarship from the BECU Foundation for community service. Rudee is to attend Scripps College in the fall. She won a scholarship for her work with the SciTech research program studying DNA.
“BECU’s scholarship program spotlights student members who, in addition to academic achievements, demonstrate a strong commitment to their community,” said Debbie Wege, executive director of the BECU Foundation. “Not only are these winners outstanding scholars, but they have shown amazing leadership and a passion for helping others in their communities. We’re proud to support this incredible group of BECU members.”
Since 1995, BECU Foundation has awarded 580 local students with scholarships.
The Foundation received more than 600 scholarship applications from BECU student members. Applicants were required to submit hours of community service, grade point, transcripts and letters of recommendation, as well as essays describing their most meaningful service experiences.
