Mercer Island tackles tough non-league teams | Boys swimming results

The Mercer Island boys swim team got a test on Tuesday afternoon at Mary Wayte Pool. The Islanders hosted a non-league meet against Shorewood and Newport.

The Mercer Island boys swim team got a test on Tuesday afternoon at Mary Wayte Pool. The Islanders hosted a non-league meet against Shorewood and Newport.

Mercer Island beat both teams, taking down Shorewood with a 132-54 score and Newport with a 103-80 score.

Shorewood, a team which finished third in last year’s state 3A state swim and Newport, which finished fourth in the 4A state meet, provided a strong test for the Islanders about halfway through the regular season.

The Islanders took the first event, winning the 200 medley relay in state time fashion. The group of Andrew Weiss, Samuel Chong, Matthew Fukuda and Marco Signorelli finished in 1:41.23. The team’s previous best finish was 1:44.66 and the 3A state qualifying time is 1:45.50, putting the team well ahead of the state time.

In the 200 freestyle event, Michael Bower finished second in 1:55.76, while Ian Caldwell was third at 1:55.81. Signorelli earned a personal win in the 200 individual medley race, posting a 2:04.86 time. In the 50 freestyle event, Weiss earned the win with a 22.14 time, besting the 4A state time of 22.85, while Caldwell was fourth with a 59.95 time. In the diving competition Cody Hall finished in third place with a score of 293.55. His teammate Connor Nielson took fourth with 275.60 points.

Austin Ralph posted a 59.25 time for third place in the 100 butterfly race, Caldwell was fourth at 59.95 and Karl MacLane was fifth with a 1:00.28 time. All three qualified for the district meet.

In the 100 freestyle, Weiss earned another win with a 49.23 time, qualifying for state, while Samuel Chong finished third with a 51.20 time. Noah Deiparine took second place in the 500 freestyle marathon in 5:16.51, while the Islanders 200 freestyle relay team took first. The group of Caldwell, Signorelli, Weiss and Matthew Fukuda finished in 1:32.61. MacLane was seventh in the 100 backstroke race in 1:06.35, and Bower was first in the 100 breaststroke race in 1:06.75. The Islander’s also finished first in the 400 meter relay in 3:38.27 with Chong, Deiparine, Caldwell and Signorelli.

The Islanders will next take on Lake Washington in a KingCo meet on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 3 p.m. at Mary Wayte Pool.
