For the second straight year, the Mercer Island wrestling team brought home a district championship last weekend. The Islanders beat out a strong field of teams at Glacier Peak High School last Saturday, winning with 130 points, over Shorewood’s 113.

Unlike the 2010 district competition, held between KingCo and Metro schools, this year’s event included schools from Skagit and Whatcom counties, like Sedro-Wolley, a long-standing power in 3A wrestling. The Islanders won three individual titles at regionals.

Six members of the Mercer Island team will compete at this weekend’s state meet at the Tacoma Dome.

Blake Johnson won the 145-pound event, beating Brandon Stratton of Oak Harbor with a 5-4 decision, while Phil Frazier pinned conference foe Logan McCallum in 3:24 in the 171 division, and Colton Knebel beat Brayden Jacobson of Everett with a 10-0 major decision in the 189 weight class.

In the 135 grouping, Kyle Shanafelt took second place overall, losing to Kyle Morgan from Sedro-Woolley, 8-2, in the championship round. T.J. Blackburn also finished second for the Islanders, losing to Joe Janicki, also from Sedro-Woolley. Jacob Pruchno will also compete for the Islanders in the 103-pound division.

The state wrestling meet begins on Friday at the Tacoma Dome. The first session will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., followed by the second session from 4 to 9:30 p.m. The third session will be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., which will include the third through eighth place matches. The championship rounds will begin at 5 p.m.
