Mercer Island wrestling second at 3A KingCo tournament

The Islanders had 12 wrestlers place in their weight classes and boasted nine finalists at the meet, with two winning their divisions.

The Mercer Island wrestling team placed second at the 3A KingCo tournament on Saturday at Juanita High School.

The Islanders had 12 wrestlers place in their weight classes and boasted nine finalists at the meet, with two winning their divisions.

Donnie Howard won the 182 bracket, beating Juanita’s Matthew Moehrle in a 7-4 decision. Dylan Majewski won the 220 class, pinning Interlake’s Saul Bobadilla in 0:56.

Also reaching final rounds for Mercer Island were Jordan Tillinger (106), Andrew Motz (120), Blake Burton (138), Masahito Kemmotsu (145), Finn Childress (160) and Connor Hill (170).

The Islanders had third-place finishers in Vinny Ricci (126), Jonah Andrews (132), Brian Wen (180) and Russell Asmus (195). Piljin Kwak was fourth at 132, and Nic Meinzinger-Richards was fifth 170.

Next, the Islanders will compete at the 3A regional wrestling tournament Feb. 12-13 in Kelso.
