Change clock and alarm batteries
Each year, approximately 600 individuals under the age of 20 die in house fires nationwide, and 80 percent of these deaths occur in homes without a working smoke alarm.
To help avoid tragedies and protect vulnerable children, the Mercer Island Fire Department is promoting the national home fire safety campaign “Change Your Clock — Change Your Battery,” which urges people change out their smoke alarm batteries when they change their clocks in the spring and fall. The clock change occured Sunday, Nov. 6, at 2 a.m., when the time was set back one hour.
