The Mercer Island youth soccer club has its first state title team, as the girls U14 team won the Washington state Founders Cup in early February.

The Mercer Island youth soccer club has its first state title team, as the girls U14 team won the Washington state Founders Cup in early February.

The Islanders, a girls U14 A team from the MIFC club, beat the Pacific FC Vipers from Vancouver, Wash., with a 3-2 win in overtime.

The team’s record this season was 25-2-8, with 66 goals scored, while allowing only nine all season. They were also the gold division semifinalists in the 2010 Sims Honda Skagit Firecracker tournament, and the champions in the 2010 Nike Crossfire select cup, 2010 Sky River tournament, 2010 U.S. Club Starfire Cup, and first division champs in the 2010 North Puget Sound League.

The team’s head coach is Bryan Mazza.

Mercer Island resident honored for work with Treehouse

Connor Creswell, a Mercer Island resident and student at Eastside Catholic, was recently honored by Treehouse for his volunteer work.

Creswell’s Cool Kicks Shoe Drive collected shoes from local schools and businesses to donate to Treehouse for foster kids.

Creswell was given the Wendy Walters Truitt Award at the annual Treehouse fundraising luncheon, Champions for Foster Kids. The award honors outstanding volunteers who show ingenuity and excellence.
