A Mercer Island High School student is petitioning the Mercer Island School District to allow students to attend the Seahawks’ Super Bowl parade in downtown Seattle Wednesday, Feb. 5.

Senior Sean Quinn created the petition at Change.org and tweeted out the link to his petition Monday night. So far, the petition has received nearly 400 supporters, with a goal of 500 listed on the website.

“This petition is not implying that school should be canceled. The petition simply asks of the district… to excuse the absences of the students that wish to attend the parade,” the petition reads.

Another portion of the petition states that while students sign the petition, it is not an excuse for them to cut class, but to add another voice to the input on the district’s decision to excuse student absences.

“Please understand that whatever decision the district makes is final and we as students are to respect and commit to this decision,” the petition reads. “However, as a student, I encourage the district to think about the history that this win implies and… that many local companies around the state are allowing their employees to attend as well.”
