MISD to limit out-of-district students next year

The Mercer Island School District will limit applications for open enrollment next year to non-resident families who already have children attending the district’s schools.

The Mercer Island School District will limit applications for open enrollment next year to non-resident families who already have children attending the district’s schools.

Superintendent Gary Plano announced his decision via the district’s Web site on March 4.

“Enrollment projections forecast a flat enrollment for 2009-2010. These projections include our current open enrollment students, which is why I am not expanding this option for non-resident families at this time,” said Plano. “We have had many inquiries about attending Mercer Island schools from non-resident families. I am honored by this interest and grateful to our staff for their ongoing commitment to providing the highest quality education for the students in our district.”

The district has said that decisions on the submitted applications will be made by June 1. Currently, 92 students who live off the Island attend the district.
