Morris, Sounders win MLS Cup

The Seattle Sounders FC brought home the team’s first MLS Cup, defeating Toronto FC in penalty kicks 5-4 in the MLS Cup final Saturday night in Toronto.

Roman Torres lifted the Sounders, connecting on the decisive penalty kick after Toronto defender Justin Morrow saw his previous shot carom off the center post. Both teams connected on four of their first five penalty kick attempts, with each goalkeeper recording a save.

Neither team scored after over 120 minutes of play, marking the first MLS Cup to go into the round of penalty kicks after a scoreless game. The Sounders were limited offensively to three shots throughout the contest, but did not concede a goal despite 19 shot attempts by Toronto, with seven of Toronto’s shots fired on goal.

Sounders forward and MLS Rookie of the Year Jordan Morris, a 2013 Mercer Island High School alum, played 108 minutes in Saturday’s final, though did not attempt a shot.
