Stanford Cardinal sophomore and former Mercer Island soccer standout Jordan Morris will return to the college soccer pitch for his junior season, Morris confirmed to various news outlets Friday.
Morris reportedly turned down a Homegrown Player contract from the Seattle Sounders, putting off a professional soccer career for at least one more year.
There was much speculation about what was next for the 20-year-old forward, who became the first college player since 1995 to earn a U.S. cap when he saw playing time during the U.S.’s 4-1 loss to Ireland in November. Whether Morris would stay in college, go pro and play in the MLS, or play professionally overseas has been a popular topic of conversation among local soccer fans.
Morris started 15 games for the Cardinal his sophomore season, posting four goals and six assists while helping Stanford to a Pac-12 conference title. Stanford was eliminated by UC Irvine in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
