Newcastle woman wins MIYFS Nissan Leaf

Winner bought a single $20 ticket to win a two-year lease of an electric car

Denise Hauck of Newcastle is the winner of a two-year lease of a 2014 Nissan Leaf raffled off by the City on behalf of Mercer Island Youth and Family Services.

The city sold $20 chances to win the electric car.

Hauck bought just one ticket.

Hauck learned about the raffle from a co-worker, Kevin Workman, who lives on Mercer Island. Hauck made a special trip to the Mercer Island Community and Events Center to purchase her ticket.

Several times since she told herself that she should buy a couple more tickets, but got too busy, she said.

“But I had it my mind,” she said. “It is a testament to the power of positive thinking!”

She said she had long considered buying a Leaf. Even before she learned about the drawing, she had been to a dealership to look one over.

The drawing was held at 5 p.m., Sunday evening as Summer Celebration!  was winding down. A few hopefuls showed up to buy a ticket at the last minute. While disappointed they cheered as MIYFS board president, called the winner and left a voice mail.

Not thinking she would hear anything Sunday evening, Hauck called to check her work voicemail as she often does on the weekend. There she heard the message and the cheering.

I was pretty excited to get that call, she said, adding that her husband was shocked. He did not know I had bought a ticket.

Hauck works for the King County real estate division in Seattle. She will charge her car at her office there. She will pay taxes on the value of the lease, an amount of $4,800.
