Chamber to discuss Affordable Care Act, free Crossfit workout.

MI Chamber lunch speaker to discuss Affordable Care Act for employers

The November Chamber membership lunch is set for Nov. 7 at noon at the Mercer Island Community and Events Center.

Speakers  Kellis Borak and David Bowman of the Washington Employers Association will speak on the Affordable Care Act.

The Affordable Care Act, or Health Care Mandate, is complicated and a challenge for small businesses.   Kellis Borak, Mercer Island resident and attorney, is the Human Resources Director at the non-profit Washington Employers Association.

Borak will address the main provisions of the ACA including: minimum standards for health insurance policies; the ‘Individual Mandate’ effective January 1, 2014, and the ‘Employer Mandate’ effective January 1, 2015

Other areas of interest include health insurance exchanges; required notices to employees; employer IRS reporting requirements and small business tax credit eligibility.

The Washington Employers Association is a non-profit member association that supports employers in all areas of workforce solutions, including labor and employment law, workers compensation management, training and human resource consulting.  Kellis has more than 28 years as a practicing attorney. She lives on Mercer Island with her family.

David Bowman is a Staff Attorney for Washington Employers, where he addresses employment and labor law issues, and drafts and reviews a wide variety of Human Resources documents to ensure compliance with State and Federal laws.

Luncheon cost is $15 for members and $20 for non-members and members without reservations.

Free workout at Crossfit with food donation

Mercer Island CrossFit is holding a Thanksgiving Food drive for the Mercer Island Youth and Family Services food bank.

On Nov. 17, anyone who wants to come and participate in a CrossFit workout can do so for free by bringing a bag of non-perishable food items for the food bank.
