The City’s solar installation campaign is well underway, and almost 70 residents attended the first workshop in early June, with 45 signing up for free site assessments. The Solarize Mercer Island goal is 30-60 homes, and many volunteers are helping spread the word.
Interested residents should attend the next 90-minute info workshop on Tuesday July 8, from 6 -7:30 p.m. at the Mercer Island Community Center, after which they are eligible for a free site assessment.
With tax credits and incentives from the state, other Seattle area campaigns have shown that these rooftop systems pay back in just 6-9 years; after that owners will produce free solar power for another 20-30 years (with minor maintenance). By participating in the Solarize program, homeowners receive about 15 percent off regular installation costs. Several contracts are now signed, and the first installation is already underway.
There are options available for partially shaded roofs, as well as outbuildings, patios, gazebos, boathouses and more. Low interest loans are also available.
