Progress on third-generation fisherman Bryce Caldwell’s Freshy’s Seafood Market is going swimmingly.
The market will sell fresh, locally caught seafood at the former Union 76 station on the corner of S.E. 24th Street and S.E. 76th Avenue across from Aljoya. Caldwell is leasing the property from Twenty Four Eleven, LLC.
This week a three-man crew of operators removed two 12,500-gallon underground gas tanks in addition to a 240-gallon oil tank over a three-day period, which caught the attention of several passersby who stopped to snap photos of the activity.
The gaping hole in the ground stood in stark contrast with several newly constructed flower planters around the old gas pump area.
Project manager Leon Cohen said the decommissioned tanks have been purchased by an outside party and will be recycled.
Removal of the large tanks required careful coordination between the Department of Ecology, the Mercer Island fire chief, and a marine chemist and soils engineer, he said.
Freshy’s Seafood Market is expected to open for business in about a month.
