Presentations regarding public comments about funding a new SR-520 floating bridge will be held on the Island at noon tomorrow, Dec. 12, at the Mercer Island City Hall Council Chambers.
Island residents David Lake, left, and his son, Michael Lake, take time to pick out just the right Christmas tree. They are assisted by attendant Wolfgang Mueller at the annual Mercer Island Lions tree lot at Farmer’s Insurance. The Lions Club is anticipating to sell all their trees by mid-December.
On behalf of all the gals and guys who attend Jazzercise classes at the CCMV, I want to thank Ivy Sizuki-Jaecks for expressing all of our feelings, thoughts and concerns about the CCMV becoming a business and not a community center. It’s truly unfair that we are being kicked out of our rooms so that the city can make more money by renting out the rooms to companies and events that will pay more money than we do. Maybe they should take out “Community” and rename it “Mercerview Center.”
We are two proud parents of four high school band members. We are helping the music teachers with handing out the band uniforms in August, taking care of them when needed, and taking re-inventory of them at the end of the marching season. We are supporting the fund drive for new band uniforms and ask the MI public to do so, also.
The very fine Mercer Island High School Marching Band had a rare disappointment last weekend. It was not chosen to march in the Jan. 20 presidential inaugural parade in Washington, D.C. Instead, the 150-member Evergreen High School Marching Band from Vancouver, Wash., was selected and will represent our state in the parade. This group is different from the Islander band in a significant way. Members must audition to participate. Here, all who want to join and work hard are included. Under the charismatic leadership of directors David Bentley, Parker Bixby and Ryan Lane, along with the help of dozens of parents, the band is a well-respected, well-oiled machine made up of enthusiastic and dedicated musicians.
Give a kid a field guide. I heard these words recently at an Audubon Society lecture and have taken them to heart for my holiday shopping. The speaker suggested a guide to birds, butterflies, trees, wildflowers, insects, amphibians, snakes or tropical fish — any topic that sparks an interest in nature.
Question: Now that winter is here, what should we do about our landscape irrigation system? Last spring, we suffered several leaks in our system.
The new Rainier Vista Boys & Girls Club in Seattle stands bright and bold against a muddy landscape of development. The new youth recreation center offers Islanders a glimpse of what’s to come in 2009: the Boys & Girls Club PEAK project.
Say what you will about Florida. It is a fun state. We found ourselves during the first week of November needing one more week of short-sleeve weather after our fabulously rare, sunny Seattle October — and, well, we had other reasons to visit the Sunshine State besides the sun.
Islander Paige Brandon was part of the New York Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Registration for boys spring lacrosse, grades five through eight, is now open online at www.mercerislandlacrosse.com.
The only competition that Mercer Island could find on Thursday came from its own bench. The Islanders began defense of the last three state titles with an overpowering 148-36 victory against Snohomish to open the season.
Nine of the Mercer Island boys basketball team players competed in their first varsity game on Wednesday night, and the result was a 56-29 loss to Ballard.
