From the shore, Islander Courtney Backman and her teammate’s strokes look effortless as they propel their boat atop a bumpy Lake Washington on a cloudy Thursday afternoon. Up close, however, the physical effort they put into each pull becomes very apparent.
More condos may be coming to the Island but this time they w ill be outside of Town Center. The company that bought Shorewood Heights Apartments in 2005 has announced plans to construct approximately 120 new condos and town homes on its 44.5 acre campus on the northeast corner of the Island.
Thirteen bicycles are strewn across the driveway of Bob Lewis’ South-end Mercer Island home. He’s accumulating as many used bikes as possible to send to Ghana, West Africa, to help farmers and healthcare workers get to their work.

Which is better, pizza or pita? It depends on who you ask. In January 2007, the three elementary schools on the Island did a lot of asking, a lot of sampling, and made a lot of improvements. After receiving a grant last October, the Mercer Island School District Wellness Committee piloted a one-month lunch program, “Four Weeks of Finer Food,” which featured more nutritious and appealing choices for elementary school children.
Mercer Island Police last week arrested two young men for investigation of two separate but serious incidents that occurred on the Island.
After successfully drilling 600 feet below the Island at Rotary Park, a sufficient supply of water has been discovered and could be tapped to use in the event of a natural disaster. Water quality tests are being evaluated, and if it is determined to be safe for human consumption, the city plans to install a hook-up for an emergency well. The $410,000 for the drilling and tests, however, won’t pay for the hook-up. City Council members will have to release additional funds to complete construction of the well.
In front of a large group of high school students and numerous citizens, City Council members last Monday unanimously approved a resolution directing city staff to reduce the amount of energy used in city operations and its vehicle fleet to affect the global climate crisis. The resolution also asks city staff to increase education about energy conservation.

Islanders are used to sharing the road with cyclists — from families on mountain bikes riding for recreation to colorfully spandexed riders training for races, and everything in between. On any given day, hundreds of bicycles traverse the Island for recreation or as part of their commute. With growing traffic and environmental concerns, as well as the lately pristine spring weather, perhaps now is the time to make the switch to two wheels.
Five tiny white puppies have been orphaned because their mother was hit by a vehicle on a private lane off West Mercer Way on the South end of the Island two weeks ago.
Mercer Island is known for its minimal crime rates and safe neighborhoods, but residents here are no safer than other Americans when it comes to identity theft.
