Burglary

A residence was burglarized overnight on July 12 in the 7600 block of S.E. 71st Street. The 46-year-old resident reported the theft of two Fezzari bicycles from his open garage, where some change was stolen during the prowling of a Porsche. Fingerprints were taken.

A burglary occurred at a restaurant in the 3000 block of 78th Avenue S.E. during the night of July 14. An unknown suspect pried the front door open and snooped through the cash register, where cash is not left overnight, and the surrounding area, according to the police report. No items were stolen.

Car prowls

An unlocked Chevrolet Suburban was prowled overnight on July 12 in the 6700 block of 80th Avenue S.E. Items stolen included a cell phone and credit and debit cards, in addition to a camera case, memory card and flash drive, which were found in the road and returned to the vehicle’s owner.

A Mercer Island woman reported that her unlocked Nissan was prowled overnight on July 12 in the 6500 block of 81st Avenue S.E. No items were stolen.

A GPS unit and “car caddy” with various items were stolen from an unlocked Chrysler that was prowled overnight on July 15 in the 6100 block of S.E. 32nd Street.

A Honda and Volkswagen, both unlocked, were prowled overnight on July 12 in the 7700 block of S.E. 70th Street. No items were stolen, and suspects are unknown. Fingerprints were not taken.

Mischief

An Island resident reported an explosion on July 13 in the 8200 block of S.E. 78th Street. An unknown suspect placed explosives in a metal garbage can with a heavy lid in the track field bleachers at the South Mercer Playfields. The explosion, which burst the garbage can’s tack-welded seams, may have occurred on July 11, when police received a call regarding an M-80 explosion in a garbage can at the same field, according to the report.

A 54-year-old Mercer Island man reported finding paint pen graffiti on West Mercer Elementary property at 4141 81st Avenue S.E. on July 14. The graffiti was painted in various locations at the school.

Forgery

A 39-year-old Mercer Island woman reported on July 14 that her credit card number was used for a purchase from the Nordstrom store in the Southcenter Mall on June 30 or July 1. She learned of the fraud through the VISA Fraud Unit, which reported that only the card number, and not a forged card, had been used at the cash register, according to the police report. The total loss is $1,751.

Theft

A 21-year-old Renton man reported a shoplifting incident that occurred in the evening of July 14 at Albertsons, on 77th Avenue S.E. A male suspect stole hot sauce and multiple hair care product bottles, which were found outside, though the suspect was not caught, according to the report.

Accidents

A one-car accident occurred at 4 a.m. on July 13 in the 4600 block of West Mercer Way. A Honda driven by a 28-year-old Seattle woman drifted over the right line while headed northbound. The vehicle traveled for 50 feet with the two right-side wheels off the road in a two-foot ditch east of the road. The driver said she was “very tired and did not know how she ended up in the ditch,” according to the incident report. The vehicle, which sustained damage on the front right side, was towed.

A 20-year-old Mercer Island woman driving a Jeep backed into a garbage truck around 8:30 a.m. on July 16 in the 9700 block of S.E. 79th Street. She was leaving her driveway when she hit the passing truck, which was headed eastbound on 79th.

A bicyclist fell off his bike around 5 p.m. on July 15 in the 8000 block of North Mercer Way, due to a flat front tire. The 36-year-old Seattle man dislocated his left shoulder when he hit the sidewalk at the North Mercer Park and Ride bus stop. Mercer Island fire and aid units came to the scene. The man’s wife drove him to a hospital.

Arrests

A 43-year-old Kirkland man was arrested on July 16 in the 3200 block of W. Concord Way for violating a civil antiharrassment protection order for a 45-year-old Mercer Island woman. He was booked into the King County Jail.

A 22-year-old Mercer Island man was arrested on July 16 during a traffic stop for driving with a suspended license in the 2800 block of 80th Avenue S.E. An officer stopped his vehicle upon recognition from past traffic stops and did a WA DOL check to find the man’s driving status. The man had 2 FTAs. The driver was booked into the Issaquah Jail.

Found

A woman reported that a suspicious knife and backpack had been left at her business’s back door on July 14 in the 2600 block of 76th Avenue S.E. A transient likely left the items, according to the police report.
