Rotary honors MIHS quartet

The Rotary Club of Mercer Island has honored Mercer Island High School seniors Moa Valentin, Clara Mak, Dylan Shobe and Jack Sieckhaus as its January Islanders of the Month.

Each student was nominated for the accolade by their instructors. Here’s a portion of the praise they received:

Valentin: “Moa has led the Mercer Island High School band program selflessly and professionally for two years as one of our student drum majors. Her skills, patience, musicianship, kindness, work ethic and world view have helped her lift up her peers in spectacular ways. She is extraordinary.”

Mak: “This student has gone above and beyond in service to the school community. I could list a million reasons Clara would deserve this award, but I will just share this example. Clara Mak spent countless hours this summer creating a MIHS ASB website. This website, mihsasb.org, will celebrate and broadcast the events of all our school groups, including sports and clubs. “

Shobe and Sieckhaus: “They have been instrumental in making our news students 10-12 feel included as they have joined my special Islander Hour. They have participated in the PAC (Parent Advisory Council) groups providing a student perspective.” Both students have served the Island community through sports and volunteering. Shobe in the lacrosse realm and with Food Lifeline and the North Helpline Food Bank. Sieckhaus on the swimming scene, including a more-than $5,000 fundraiser swim around the Island to raise awareness for children’s cancer and The First Night Project.
