The Mercer Island Rotary Club recently named MIHS seniors Helena Shield and Fletcher Stribling its Islanders of the Month for December.
Shield participates in volleyball, journalism, Math Club, Science Club and MIHS’ Women in STEM Club. She is a member of both National Honor Society and French Honor Society.
Outside of school, she volunteers with Swedish Hospital in Edmonds and is involved with Full Life Adult Care during the summer. She has also volunteered with Youth Tutoring Program and the Olympic Cascade Aquatics (OCA) swim team. She plays club volleyball, participates in club swimming and plays piano.
The daughter of Alan Shield and Hong Tang, she plans to attend college and study a STEM-related subject, possibly computer science.
Stribling serves as financial manager for the MIHS student store, is an active member of DECA, a Diversity Action Team member and director of Mercer Trace, Inc.
Outside of school, Stribling has over 300 volunteer hours through Mercer Island Presbyterian Church (MIPC), which include house-building in Mexico, student leadership volunteering, and volunteer activities with YouthCare and Urban Plunge.
The son of Tanya Asmus, he enjoys playing rec soccer and plans to attend college after high school.
