SafeWise ranks MI fourth on its Safest Cities list

SafeWise ranked Mercer Island No. 4 on its eighth annual Washington’s 20 Safest Cities list for 2022.

The company, which focuses its efforts on online home security and safety, released its widely-circulated list on March 8 that is compiled by reviewing FBI crime report statistics and population data.

Sammamish topped the list, followed by Camas and Snoqualmie in the second and third spots and Kenmore rounded out the top five behind Mercer Island.

“The city thanks our police officers and staff for helping ensure strong public safety on the Island, and our community for working together in crime prevention and deterrence,” reads a city Facebook post.

The Mercer Island Police Department noted on its Facebook page that it greatly appreciates the community’s strong support and the plethora of Islanders who engage with the department on crime prevention and safety.

For the second consecutive year, Washington’s violent crime rate continued a descent from 3.0 incidents per 1,000 people to 2.9, according to SafeWise’s website. On the overall property crime rate front, the state’s 27.3 incidents per 1,000 people remained the same as the previous year.

“The ‘safest’ cities rankings are intended to highlight cities with low crime rates and ignite conversation and action around how to make all cities and communities safer,” said SafeWise, noting that it reviewed 2020 FBI crime statistics, which was the most recent complete report available at the time of ranking.
