The Mercer Island School Board will hold two public hearings this month concerning the district’s proposed hazard mitigation plan. The hearings will be held during the two regular board meetings this month — at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 9 and 8:15 a.m. Thursday, June 23, both at City Hall.

This plan will qualify the district for federal funding and will assist in educating the community to be prepared for such an event.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requires each local government entity to adopt a multi-hazard mitigation plan to remain eligible for future pre- or post-disaster FEMA mitigation funding.

The Mercer Island Hazard Mitigation Team assessed the building retrofits and engineering assessments and concluded that no further studies or retrofits are required at this time.

The district will continue to maintain and update building data for seismic risk assessments and emergency planning for earthquakes, including drop and cover and other safety-related evacuation drills.

The proposed hazard mitigation plan is available on the district’s website.
