Rotary Islanders of October
The Mercer Island Rotary has named MIHS students Hannah Salter and Matthew Sedlacek as the “Islanders of the Month” for October.
Salter, a third-year National Honors Society member, is the president of the Kids Corps Tutoring Club at MIHS and a math tutor for elementary students. She was Most Valuable Player and captain of JV for the girls lacrosse team, as a sophomore, and was part of the state-winning team as a junior. She plays flute in concert and marching bands, where she is a section leader. She is also a Bridges leader. Places where Salter volunteers include Children’s Hospital and schools for autistic children such as Boyer Children’s Clinic and the Academy for Precision Learning. She also helps out with the Safe Rides Program and teaches flute for several middle school students. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking and skiing. The daughter of Andrew Salter and Michele Gammer, Salter plans to study neuroscience at a four-year university.
Sedlacek is the varsity tennis team captain and plays lacrosse, and was Most Valuable Player of both teams in 2007. He is also a Natural Helper and member of the National Honor Society. His extracurricular activities have included the Teen Council, V.O.I.C.E. (Volunteer Outreach in Communities everywhere), the lunch buddies program for special needs students, and Safe Rides. He plans to attend the University of Washington or the University of North Carolina in pursuit of becoming an elementary school teacher.
