A man suspected of robbing a bank in Seattle was shot by Seattle police detectives on Mercer Island Monday, according to Commander Leslie Burns of the Mercer Island Police Department.

The incident started just before noon, when Seattle officers pursued the suspect onto Interstate 90 and ended the chase with shots fired near the intersection of West Mercer Way and North Mercer Way as the suspect attempted to turn his vehicle around, police said.

The man turned his vehicle into a West Mercer Way driveway, which police blockaded, according to media reports. Officers shot the man in the hand after he drove toward their vehicles with his car. He was then taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The man is suspected of robbing the Qualstar Credit Union in the 1700 block of Fourth Avenue South in Seattle at around 11:55 a.m.

Seattle police remain the primary investigators of the incident with Mercer Island police assisting as needed, Burns said. The two officers who fired at the victim were placed on routine administrative leave.
