Feb. 17

Burglary: At 11:05 a.m., an Islander in the 9200 block of SE 57th St. reported a burglary. The suspect forced entry to the home through the garage. Nothing appeared to be stolen, but the house was ransacked.

Prowling: A 55-year-old Island woman reported at 12:36 p.m. that her unlocked vehicle was prowled some time in the past week in the 5300 block of 90th Ave. SE. There was no property damage, but an employee ID card was taken.

Fraud: At 3:42 p.m.in the 9000 block of SE 64th St., an Island man said that his Social Security number was used in an unsuccessful attempt to open credit cards and apply for a line of credit.

Feb. 18

Prowling: An Island woman parked her vehicle in a secured resident’s garage in the 2500 block of 76th Ave. SE. At 6:43 a.m., she reported that the rear driver’s side window was smashed and someone stole her purse, credit and debit cards and ID information. Police said there is possible surveillance video footage for the garage.

Burglary: At 12:18 p.m., facility staff in the 2400 block of 76th Ave. SE reported that someone burglarized five locked, private storage units in a secure area. Security footage shows three male suspects wearing head lamps. Not all of the individual unit owners reported thefts.

Malicious mischief: An Island man reported at 8:47 p.m. that the driver’s side front and rear tires were slashed while his car was parked in his driveway, in the 3600 block of 90th Ave. SE.

Feb. 19

Burglary: An Island man said at 1:48 p.m. that someone burglarized storage units attached to his residence in the 6900 block of SE 33rd St. The suspect cut the locks on the unit doors and stole one box of electronic accessories.

Burglary: At 3:44 p.m., an Island woman said someone burlgarized her residence in the 4100 block of W. Mercer Way and stole jewelry. The suspect entered the house by shattering the glass of a lower level door.

Burglary: At 7:47 p.m., an Island woman in the 2400 block of 76th Ave. SE reported that someone broke into her storage locker and stole snowboarding items.

Feb. 20

Theft: A Des Moines man reported at 2:46 p.m. that someone stole tools from a job site in the 6400 block of E. Mercer Way.

Reckless endangerment: A Kent man reported at 2:46 p.m. that three juvenile males were throwing items off the overpass in the 3100 block of Shorewood Drive. All three were arrested on suspicion of reckless endangerment. They were also in possession of stolen property and marijuana.

Malicious mischief: An Island woman in the 9000 block of SE 37th St. reported at 5:13 p.m. that she found her car tire was slashed when she returned from vacation.

Feb. 22

Theft: A Tacoma man said at 4:46 p.m. that someone broke into his secured trailer in the 3800 block of E. Mercer Way. The suspect stole various tools.

Feb. 23

Warrant arrest: A Mercer Island suspect was arrested for a felony warrant out of Pierce County at 11:27 a.m. in the 3600 block of E. Mercer Way.

Burglary: A Redmond man said at 1:15 p.m. that someone stole a variety of power tools from a vacant house next to a job site in the 1600 block of Roanoke Way.

Informational report: At 2 p.m., a man’s White Swan vehicle was towed in the 3500 block of E. Mercer Way.

Feb. 25

Theft: An Island man said at 2:58 p.m. that his bike, his wife’s bike and his helmet had been taken in the 2400 block of 76th Ave. SE. The suspect cut the cable lock that was wrapped around the bikes.

Feb. 27

Burglary: Two Island women in the 9000 block of E. Shorewood Drive said their storage facility was burglarized sometime between Jan. 16 and 2:42 p.m. on Feb. 27. There was slight damage to the unit door, and a large decorative skeleton, metal detector and glass decorative piece were stolen. No other unit owners in the facility reported burglaries.

Feb. 29

Lost property: An Island woman said at 4:17 p.m. that her son left his clarinet on a bench while boarding the school bus in the 2700 block of 76th Ave. SE.

Warrant arrest: A Mercer Island suspect was arrested on a warrant from the Kent Police Department at 4:23 p.m. after a traffic stop in the 4500 block of Island Crest Way. The subject was released on scene after police cited him for driving with a suspended license.

March 2

Burglary: A vacant house in the 7200 block of SE 24th St., undergoing major renovations, was burglarized between Feb. 29 and 10:31 a.m. on March 2. Multiple parties and companies had access to the home, and the back door was left open. Someone stole $10,000 in cash from an unlocked safe inside the house.

Theft: An Island man reported at 1:36 p.m. that a bug shield was taken from a vehicle parked in his driveway in the 2400 block of 72nd Ave. SE. No damage was done to the vehicle.

Assault: At 3:43 p.m., an Island woman in the 5600 block of W. Mercer Way reported a domestic violence assault. The suspect was booked into SCORE jail on suspicion of assault and battery.

March 3

Burglary: A Tacoma man reported at 8:49 a.m. that someone stole tools, including an electrical extension cord and a kerosene heater, overnight from a construction site in the 9900 block of SE 39th St. The site is mostly secure, except for a small opening in the framing. Persons of interest are working at an adjacent job site. This was the second burglary at this site in recent weeks.

Prowling: A Lake Forest Park woman said at 11:45 a.m. that her car was prowled while parked in a lot at Clarke Beach. Her purse and bankcards were taken.

Another prowl: At 12:25 p.m., an Island woman’s locked car was prowled in the 4100 block of 82nd Ave. SE. Her front, passenger-side window was shattered and her purse was stolen.

Fraud: At 12:45 p.m. a 52-year-old Island woman in the 9000 block of SE 61st St. said that a Comcast account was unlawfully opened in her name in Kent. The account was sent to collections, and she had just received notice of the fraudulently opened account.

Death investigation: At 5:11 p.m. a subject experienced cardiac arrest at an assisted living home in the 9200 block of SE 42nd St. A worker at the home provided CPR, before police and fire personnel took over. Medic One arrived and continued lifesaving efforts until a valid DNR was obtained and family members were consulted. The subject died at 5:32 p.m. No suspicious circumstances were noted. A chaplain arrived on the scene and assisted the family with funeral arrangements.

Crime statistics for February

Every month, the Police Department calculates crime statistics and compares them to numbers from the year prior. In February of this year, there were 70 serious offenses, the same number as in 2015. The department saw fewer cases of fraud and auto theft, but had seven more cases of larceny.

This year, there were 16 adult arrests and four juvenile arrests. Police arrested 19 adults and two juveniles in February 2015. There were 1,628 calls for service this year, compared to 1,766 in 2015.
