It was, for many, an unsurprising finish. The Islanders soccer team clinched another victory and another shutout, picking up a win during the final regular season game against Juanita last week. With the win, the Islanders put the official undefeated stamp on their 2009 regular season record after a 4-0 win against the Rebels. The team finished the season 15-0-1 overall.

That record, which earned the Islanders another KingCo title three weeks ago, will now prepare for the first round of the state tournament, bypassing districts and regionals with its spotless record.

During the Juanita game, Danny Strome earned the first goal of the night off an assist from Chris Morris in the early minutes of the match. Morris would go on to score twice more, the first off an assist from Tyler Ybarra, also during the first half. His second goal of the evening was made in the waning minutes of the second half, after connecting with Strome. The fourth goal came from Nick Ward on a pass from Alex Wood with 12 minutes left to play.

“We’re doing well and it is really exciting,” said coach Steve Newman. “They’ve earned this.”

The team, currently ranked No. 1 in the state, will now focus on the state tournament, a place where many of the team members have been before. The Islanders will meet their first opponent at home on May 19.

Newman said the team’s perfect record can easily be attributed to the team itself.

“They have good team chemistry and communication,” he said. “They work hard together.”
