Sound Transit CEO to speak at Chamber meeting

Ready or not, light rail is coming to Mercer Island. The Island is part of the East Link project, which will expand light rail from downtown Seattle to the Eastside. It will also connect to the Central Link light rail system operating between downtown Seattle and Sea-Tac Airport.

Peter Rogoff, the new CEO of Sound Transit, is the speaker for the June Mercer Island Chamber of Commerce luncheon. Appointed to the position in January, he brings an extensive career of transportation leadership to the job, including serving as the former head of the Federal Transit Administration from 2009-2015.

Heroin, opiate task force meeting to be held May 31

The public is invited to attend an upcoming community meeting where King County Heroin and Prescription Opiate Addiction Task Force members will be present to gather input on the opiate challenges facing the region’s communities.

Task force members will facilitate informal tabletop discussions about prevention, treatment expansion and health services related to opiate addiction. Mayor Nancy Backus of Auburn and Mayor Denis Law of Renton will make welcoming remarks.

The meeting will be held from 6:15-8:45 p.m. on Tuesday at the Renton Community Center (1715 SE Maple Valley Highway). There is no fee to attend.

MICEC closed May 30 for holiday

In observance of the Memorial Day holiday, the Mercer Island Community and Event Center (MICEC) will be closed on Monday, with no programs or rentals being offered on this day. City offices will also be closed.

Indoor Playground to close Friday for summer

Indoor Playground, a program offered by Mercer Island Parks and Recreation at the Community and Event Center, is closing for the season. The last day to come and play is from 2-4:30 p.m. Friday.

Indoor Playground will return Wednesday, Sept. 7.
