Rowers earn UW opening day invite

Seven students at Mercer Island High School who are a part of the Mount Baker Crew team’s varsity 8s have been invited to participate in the University of Washington Windermere Cup Opening Day on Saturday, May 2, at Montlake Cut.

Ai Tanaka, Thomas Ehlers, Luke Gering, Robert Capelluto and Cole Johnson are members of the men’s varsity 8s, which recently took second place at the Brentwood Regatta on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Lizzy Vincent and Jennifer Travis are members of the women’s varsity 8s and also took second at Brentwood.

The Windermere Cup 2009 will feature the men’s and women’s Brazilian Rowing Federation, University of Miami women’s team and the Oregon State University men’s team, competing against the UW’s teams.

Shot clock for boys basketball

The WIAA announced on Friday that it will impose a 35-second shot clock for high school boys basketball next season. The measure was passed by a 42-11 margin despite being narrowly defeated three times before.

Washington becomes just the seventh state to impose the shot clock for boys basketball.

High school girls basketball has had a 30-second shot clock in Washington state since 1974.
