Eastside FC teams win titles

Eastside FC teams win titles

Eleven students from Mercer Island helped their various Eastside FC soccer teams to top finishes at the Washington State Cup and Washington Youth Soccer Challenge Cup tourney, held at the beginning of May in Tukwila.

Corey Goelz, an eighth-grader at Islander Middle School, plays goalie for the Girls 95 Red team, which finished first in its division.

Other students include: Jedediah Jacobson, Taylor Ward, Jordan Morris, Stephanie Silke, all of whom helped their teams to the championships. Logan Barton-Rowledge, Jason Cohen, Joshua Lee, Connor Nielsen, Connor Freeman and Sean Bender each helped their teams to win in the Challenge Cup.

MIHS grads help UW water polo take second

Two Mercer Island High School graduates, helped the University of Washington water polo team take second place at a spring invitational tournament at the end of April. The team, which includes Tom Stowell, class of 2006, and Sam Sussman, class of 2008, lost in the finals to UC-Berkeley by one goal.

MIHS soccer earns honors

The KingCo 3A boys soccer league honored Mercer Island last week, giving senior midfielder Chris Morris, a team captain, league player of the year, and head coach Steve Newman was named coach of the year by the group. Other team members named to the All-KingCo first team include: senior Forrest Marowitz, as goalie; junior Matt Johnson and Taylor Ward, at defense; Morris, as a midfielder, and Danny Strome, as a forward. All-KingCo second team members include: midfielders Tyler Ybarra, Taylor Backous, and Nick Ward and Diego Corvaland at forward.

The Islanders began the run to the state finals with a first-round game on Tuesday evening.

NW Yeshiva golfer qualifies for state

Northwest Yeshiva sophomore Elie Aboulafia qualified for the 1B/2B state golf tournament this week after a fourth-place finish at the district meet at the Gallery Golf Course in Oak Harbor. Aboulafia’s finish, with an 85, is the highest placement for Yeshiva. He was also runner-up in the league championship and qualified as first alternate for state last year. Only two Yeshiva players have previously made appearances in the state tournament: Jake Rosen, in 2002, and Mallory Genauer in 2004 and 2005.

Northwest Yeshiva was also represented at the district tournament by sophomores Saul Greene and Ben Spear. The team is coached by Drew Artiaga.

Island golfer 15th at Tri-District tournament

Johnie Freatman, a student at the Bear Creek School in Redmond, participated in the 1B/2B Tri-District golf tournament at the Gallery Golf Course in Oak Harbor. Freatman, who lives on the Island, earned a 15th-place finish. He shot a 94, exactly 20 points behind the leader, Highland Christian senior Craig Crawford.

Boys lacrosse top seed for state

The MIHS boys lacrosse Division I team heads into this week’s opening rounds of the playoffs undefeated, as the top seed in the tournament. The team will face off against Vashon on Friday evening at Islander Stadium in the first round of the state playoffs.

Last week, the team beat Eastlake, 16-1, before grabbing a 12-7 victory over Curtis.

Crew heads to nationals

Several Mt. Baker varsity crew teams qualified for nationals in Cincinnati in June. MIHS teammates and seniors Ai Tanaka, Robbie Capelluto and Thomas Ehlers will miss graduation to attend the event. Also attending will be: Cole Johnson, Lizzy Vincent and Kyle Wunderlin.

Girls basketball summer hoop camp

The annual summer hoop camp for girls in grades one through eight will be June 22-25. Registration information can be found at www.migb.org. E-mail MIHS coach Jamie Prescott at jamiemprescott@yahoo.com with questions. The camp will be coached by the high school coaching staff and the high school players. The camp will concentrate on the fundamentals of basketball, for beginning to the advanced player.

Island girls basketball tourney in June

Seventeen teams will attend a MIHS girls basketball tournament during the weekend of June 6 and 7. Games will be played at the high school, North Mercer Gym and the Boys & Girls Club. Schedule and bracket information will be posted at www.migb.org a few days before the tournament.
