The effect of the Seattle Montlake Bridge closures this weekend could ripple across area

Beat the Bridge race and maintenance issues will close a key choke point between the University District and SR 520.

The Washington State Department of Transportation calls it ‘Much ado about Montlake‘.

The Montlake Bridge is the place to be, or not be depending on your mode of transportation on Sunday, May 19, according to WSDOT.

The annual “Beat the Bridge” race will close the Montlake Bridge across the Montlake Cut for vehicles heading southbound, and the ramp from eastbound SR 520 to northbound Montlake will be closed from 8 to 10 a.m. so thousands of runners can make a mad five mile dash across the bridge onto 24th Avenue S.E. before it opens. The effects of the closure could last much longer than 10 a.m.

The annual U District Street fair is set for this Saturday and Sunday. WSDOT officials suggest that unless you’re lacing up for the race, take an alternate route on Sunday morning.

Much later, WSDOT crews will close the Montlake Bridge from 10 p.m. Sunday, May 19, until 5 a.m. Monday, May 20, to repair the locking mechanism for the drawspan. Drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes.
