Three more Islanders have added their names to the ranks of people who will be running for election this fall. From the Mercer Island City Council, Mike Cero and Jane Meyer Brahm will run for this seats once again, while Janet Frohnmayer will seek another term on the Mercer Island School Board of Directors.

Janet Frohnmayer recently announced that she will run for re-election for a second term on the Mercer Island School District Board of Directors.

Frohnmayer has served as vice president and president of the board, and for the past three years she has served on the “Bridge the Gap” task force and is currently the board representative to the 21st Century Facilities Planning Committee.

“I have really enjoyed working with my fellow board members and our superintendent, Dr. Gary Plano, and believe we’ve accomplished a great deal over the past three and a half years, between hiring our superintendent, approving the 2020 vision and personalized learning goal, working collaboratively with the City of Mercer Island, and launching the Facilities Planning Committee,” Frohnmayer said.

Frohnmayer’s priorities for the board include continuing to work in a productive partnership with the superintendent, continuing to make progress towards the 2020 Vision and personalized learning goal, addressing facility needs for the future and the continued challenge of maintaining high standards and excellence in an environment where state financial support for education declines each year.

Prior to being elected to the School Board, Frohnmayer served in leadership roles on the Mel Levine planning committee, the Parent Ed Team and the PTA Council. She worked as a management consultant for Bain & Company, in both San Francisco and Boston, and received an MBA from The Tuck School at Dartmouth College and a Bachelor of Arts from Stanford University. She is also a Cornish College of the Arts trustee.

Frohnmayer has lived on Mercer Island for 17 years. Her daughter attends Mercer Island High School and her son is attending college.

Mike Cero has announced that he will run for re-election for Position 3 on the City Council.

“Mercer Island is a wonderful place to live,” Cero said. “I proudly represent you on the Council, and I would like to continue this privilege. My priorities are characterized by those policies that impact seniors, children and the community.”

Cero has an undergraduate degree in civil engineering from the United States Military Academy. After serving in the Army Corps of Engineers for nine years, Cero earned an MBA with an accounting concentration from Seattle University. Army experiences include ranger school, senior parachutist, air assault, two combat tours and over six years of overseas assignments. He was awarded the U.S. Army Bronze Star and received honorary Mississippi citizenship by the governor of Mississippi for his service with the 155 Mississippi brigade combat team.

Cero was first elected to the City Council in 2007. He has been serving on the Youth and Family Services Advisory Board, Parks and Recreation Sub-Committee, King County Committee to End Homelessness Governing Board, Public Safety Sub-Committee, King County Flood Control District Advisory Committee and the Renton Airport Advisory Committee.

Mike is married to Dr. Susie Cero, an orthopedic surgeon practicing in Renton. They have three young children.

Cero will host a number of meet and greets, May 11, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Tully’s Coffee; May 20, from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Olde Wine Store, and May 24 from 8 to 9 p.m. at Bennett’s Bistro.

Jane Meyer Brahm announced her candidacy for Position 1 on the Mercer Island City Council. She was selected in January from a field of 17 applicants for the appointment to the seat vacated by Steve Litzow. Brahm’s campaign manager is former Mercer Island Mayor Alan Merkle.

“I was honored to have been selected to serve my community,” said Meyer Brahm. “I value the quality of life we enjoy on Mercer Island and will work to preserve it for all of our citizens.”

She believes the biggest challenge facing the City Council is to maintain the Island’s level of services and quality of life in the face of declining revenues. She currently serves as liaison to the Arts Council, member of the city’s sustainability committee and represents Mercer Island on the Eastside Transportation Partnership board.

A resident of Mercer Island since 1976, Meyer Brahm is currently working with the Mercer Island Historical Society on a new, revised history book of Mercer Island. She was editor and general manager of the Mercer Island Reporter for 11 years and was a member of the staff since 1983. She received the 2010 Distinguished Service Award from the City of Mercer Island and was named “Communicator of the Year” in 2002 by the Seattle Chapter of Women in Communication. In 2001 she received the Miles Turnbull Award for Journalism from the Washington Newspaper Publishers’ Association, the highest award given by the state association.

Meyer Brahm is a founder and past-president of the Mercer Island Sister City Association, secretary of the Mercer Island Chamber of Commerce, former board member of the Mercer Island Boys and Girls Club, and former treasurer of the Society of Professional Journalists, Western Washington chapter.

A native of Kansas City, Mo., she earned a bachelor’s degree from Creighton University and a master’s degree in English from the University of Tulsa. She and her husband, Bob, have between them four daughters and four grandchildren
